2009 Kenosha Business of the Year:
LMI Packaging Solutions, Inc.

In Memory of Theresa Sykes

It is with a heavy heart and an inspired soul that I write my blog today.

My mother passed away last Tuesday and it is fitting that I honor her in my business blog. LMI Packaging Solutions would not exist today had it not been for her unfailing support of my father. She was the great woman behind the great man. Though she seldom got the credit she deserved, she was the one who with five children, given a budget that was described back then as ‘living from week to week’, fully supported my dad. His request was to refinance the house they had worked so hard to buy in order to come up with fifteen hundred dollars needed to buy a broken down printing press. Dad would rebuild the press by day and repair Twinkie machines by night to feed the family. It was a huge risk and would require a great deal of sacrifice from both of them.  Mom would take care of everything at home, and I mean everything. I marvel at how well she nourished us in every way. Mom’s faith in a Higher Power and my dad, as well as her optimism and energy was like none other. I shake my head in awe as I give thanks for the inspiration she has been in my life.

As a mother of five children, grandma to 17, and “Gigi” to 5 great grandchildren my mother can best be described as ‘Unconditional Love’. Make no mistake, she had conditions. As an Italian mother she had plenty of them, but time after time, she put her conditions aside, and loved us exactly as we were. If you have experienced being loved like this way you know that there is no greater gift in life. It is so powerful because being loved like this creates the strength, courage and confidence we need to deal with just about anything life brings. I understand now that to give these to us, mom had to personify them in herself.

Though it is always tremendously difficult to lose such an important force in one’s life there is great comfort and peace in what she has instilled in all who knew her. I know that I aspire to be the woman she was in the world. I know the world is better for having had my mom in it and it seems to me that that is what we are here to create in our short time on this earth.

Theresa, Terry, Mom, Tishy, Grandma, GiGi, Thank You, We Love You, and we will carry you in our hearts till we meet again.
