LMI outperforms on the Wal-Mart Scorecard.
Wal-Mart, North America’s largest retailer, recently announced a new initiative to reduce packaging across their global supply chain by five percent by 2013. To do this, they have introduced a highly technical Scorecard, designed to quantify the sustainability of packaging based on seven distinct standards.
LMI developed and commercialized its unique, nonfoil Eco-LidSM product to meet rapidly increasing demands for safer, more environmentally conscious packaging. Eco-Lid scored big on the seven key Wal-Mart Scorecard standards: Remove, Reduce, Reuse, Renew, Recycle, Revenue and Read.
- Remove
Cut out unnecessary packaging, boxes or layers and eliminate materials harmful to human health and the environment.
LMI’s Eco-Lid eliminates the need for overcapping, and is available in individual die-cut and daisy chain formats to produce the least amount of waste. - Reduce
“Right-size” packages, optimize material strength and design packages appropriately for contents and merchandising requirements.
Eco-Lid is lighter weight than comparable materials, reducing freight costs by as much as 20 percent compared to foil. - Reuse
All transport packaging should be reused or recycled by 2011 through improved pallets and reusable plastic containers (RPCs).
Solving the problem of disposal starts by cutting down what you’re throwing out. There are more Eco-Lids per pallet than foil, increasing transportation savings for lower CO2 emissions. And LMI’s patented cartridge-dispensing system expands these savings even further. - Renew
Use materials made of renewable resources, or select biodegradable or compostable materials.
Eco-Lid’s green-friendly composition is only the first in an ongoing effort to research, develop and provide sustainable solutions for generations to come. - Recycle
Materials should be chosen based on recycleability post use, to reach a 35 percent municipal recycling rate by 2011.
All Eco-Lid components are environmentally friendly, sustainable and recyclable. - Revenue
Achieve all principles at cost parity or cost savings.
Eco-Lid delivers all of this and more at pricing competitive with traditional foil material. And the necessary seal temperature is 25 percent less than foil, for even greater energy savings.

However, this is just the beginning. We see Wal-Mart’s Scorecard as a positive step in a continuous pursuit of better packaging standards. But this is only one step. We understand the advantages that pushing for cleaner, more efficient and more cost-effective packaging solutions can have for the environment and your business. Today, such insight has led to LMI’s acclaimed first-generation introduction of our Eco-Lid range of products. Looking forward, we are already hard at work, researching and developing materials and solutions for the next generation.
Sustainable packaging is, without question, one of our industry’s biggest challenges. From recyclability to biodegradability to materials that further reduce CO2 emissions to possibilities yet to be uncovered, we’re dedicated to finding solutions.
